Minister Oliver highlighted Canada's innovation and smart regulation for major resource projects.
"Our Government's priorities are jobs and economic growth for Canadians while assuring the protection of our environment," said Minister Oliver. "The natural resource sectors are a driving economic force in Canada. That is why we are committed to supporting innovative technology and policy in this field."
The Minister outlined Canada's advantage in the world due to its wealth of natural resources. He explained how innovation and smart regulation are essential for Canada to fully leverage close to $500 billion in potential investment in our natural resources. He also described current efforts through the Major Projects Management Office initiative to improve regulatory performance.
"Our Government has taken great strides toward making our complex regulatory system more efficient, and we remain focused on the goal of 'one project, one review,'" said Minister Oliver. "Providing an efficient regulatory regime is fundamental to a stable, predictable climate for investment."
Minister Oliver further explained that technological innovation has already enabled Canada to find and extract oil, gas, metals and minerals effectively and responsibly.
"In the oil sands, the amount of greenhouse gases emitted per barrel of oil produced has been reduced by a third since the early 1990s and as much as 90 percent of the water used in oil sands extraction is now being recycled - thanks to technological innovation," said Minister Oliver.
