(firmenpresse) - MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 11/27/11 -- A recent study carried out by Swinton, the UK's leading high street retailer of , has revealed that one in three motorists do not know the difference between de-icer and anti-freeze.
Winter is fast approaching and Swinton is encouraging drivers to ensure they know the clear function of each product. Just over half of motorists surveyed thought that anti-freeze was used for de frosting windows.
Swinton wants to ensure drivers know that anti-freeze is for the engine and de-icer is for frost on windows.
The survey also found unusual items that motorists use to scrape ice off their car. A staggering 53% of motorists still used boiling water as a method of getting rid of ice. Other popular items used were a CD case (27%) and a credit card (14%).
According to the survey the most popular items used to scrape ice off windows:
Swinton is stressing those drivers who still continue to use boiling water to use de-icer and an appropriate ice scraper instead. Boiling water from the kettle can cause cracks in windows that can be potentially dangerous.
Steve Chelton, Claims Manager at Swinton says, "It is surprising to see motorists still confused over the functions of anti-freeze and de-icer as it is basic car maintenance. For those drivers who are still using boiling water and other items to defrost windows should consider using an ice scrapper or de-icer as improvised items can cause cracks."
