CSCE Supports Infrastructure Canada Engagement Process

(firmenpresse) - MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwire) -- 11/30/11 -- The federal government's decision to seek public engagement leading to a long-term national infrastructure program shows vision and leadership, says Randy Pickle, President of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. Infrastructure decisions, he said, require the best of advice and must be based on experience gained from past projects. With this announcement, Infrastructure Canada has committed to this kind of consultation and review.

CSCE believes the next round of infrastructure investment must above all else be durable. sustainable infrastructure, as opposed to disposable infrastructure, has minimal social and environmental impact, is readily maintainable and is adaptable to future needs. Sustainable infrastructure can last hundreds of years, not decades. There are examples across Canada of bridges, water treatment and distribution systems and transportation routes that are still supporting Canada's quality of life after more than 100 years of continuous operation. Canada's civil engineers are committed to the development of a national plan that will deliver this kind of long-term infrastructure.

As the learned society for civil engineers, CSCE brings a unique and unbiased professional perspective to this public discussion. Designing, constructing and maintaining infrastructure is what civil engineers do and CSCE's members are the most experienced infrastructure experts in the country. CSCE represents practicing and academic civil engineers in both the public and private sector.

CSCE looks forward to partnering with Infrastructure Canada and other key stakeholders in this exciting and essential engagement process.
