OIC Announces November Options Trading Volume Off 2% While Year-to-Date Volume Is up 19%

(firmenpresse) - CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 12/01/11 -- The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that total options trading volume for November was 344,377,310 contracts, 2.18 percent less than the November 2010 volume of 352,045,303 contracts.

Year-to-date volume stood at 4,242,423,240 contracts at the end of November, 19.24 percent higher than the same point last year when 3,557,861,250 contracts were traded. On November 9, options trading surpassed four billion contracts for the first time in history and 2011 will mark the ninth consecutive year of annual record volume in the options industry.

Average daily trading volume for 2011 was 18,365,469 contracts, up 18.72 percent over the 15,468,962 contracts traded in the same period last year. Average daily trading volume in November was 16,398,919 contracts, 2.18 percent lower than average daily volume of 16,764,062 contracts in November 2010.

OIC also reported that equity options volume (options on individual stocks and ETFs) in November came in at 317,497,138 contracts, down 3.44 percent compared to the same period last year when 328,797,894 contracts were exchanged. Daily equity options volume had an average of 15,118,911 contracts per day in November, which is 3.44 percent less than the year-ago level of 15,657,043. Year-to-date equity options volume was 3,925,903,025 contracts, which is 19.33 percent higher than the same point last year when 3,289,971,364 contracts were traded.
