CANO/ACIO Advocates the Adoption of the Standards and Competencies for Cancer Chemotherapy Nursing Practice

(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/05/11 -- The Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO/ACIO) seeks the adoption of their recently released Standards and Competencies for Cancer Chemotherapy Nursing Practice across Canadian hospitals and cancer care centres.
CANO/ACIO contends that cancer chemotherapy administration and care requires specific knowledge, skill, and judgment. CANO/ACIO recommends that all patients receive cancer chemotherapy from Registered Nurses who have completed an additional education program designed to meet a pre-determined standard of practice and who demonstrate ongoing competency.
"The development of these standards brings Canada on par with countries such as Australia and the USA who have cancer chemotherapy standards of care for nurses," said association president Dr. Brenda Sabo. "The next step is to facilitate their adoption across Canada."
In addition, CANO/ACIO will reach out to external partners and health care administrators and leaders across Canada for their support with these standards.
"CANO/ACIO will mobilize its members as advocates to ensure adoption of the standards. This will be accomplished through the implementation of a toolkit designed to support the adoption of the standards," said Dr. Sabo.
The NSCA toolkit includes recommended content for organizations to include in cancer chemotherapy policies, marketing and promotional materials, a resource list, and educational information. The toolkit is easy to follow and provides guidelines and suggestions that can be modified to meet the needs of a variety of organizations around implementation.
