Law Society Approves Articling Consultation Process
(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/09/11 -- The Law Society's governing body today approved a three-month consultation period for the articling component of the lawyer licensing process. The Articling Task Force Consultation Report, which includes five possible options, is being shared with members of the profession and other related organizations for input by March 15, 2012.
The Law Society formed the Articling Task Force in June 2011 to look at the issues related to articling and the challenges facing the current articling requirement. These include the increasing number of unplaced candidates, the competency-related principles that articling is intended to address, as well as additional or alternative approaches to articling.
"Lawyers throughout Ontario have been dedicated to providing and supervising the practical hands-on training requirement that law school graduates must complete to be eligible to be called to the Ontario Bar," says Law Society Treasurer and Articling Task Force member Laurie H. Pawlitza. "While the profession's support has sustained the articling program over many generations, the number of licensing candidates is growing steadily and there are not enough articling positions to meet the needs of current and incoming candidates."
The task force considered the importance of ensuring transitional training has objective and demonstrable standards and does not have the unintended effect of creating unfair barriers to licensing.
"The licensing of lawyers is an integral part of the Law Society's mandate to regulate the profession in the public interest and our focus is to ensure the public is served by lawyers who are fully competent and professional, while also ensuring that our licensing requirements are fair and accessible," adds Treasurer Pawlitza. "We look forward to the profession's written comments. Additional proposals are also welcome."
The task force will consider the input received during the consultation and provide a final report to Convocation in May 2012.
