(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/13/11 -- Today, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, announced the details of Canada's support to the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide relief food assistance for drought-affected populations in Afghanistan.

"The impact of drought in Afghanistan calls for the most effective response to ensure food reaches the most vulnerable, particularly women and children before winter conditions prevent access," said Minister Oda. "Canada's support to the WFP will provide emergency food assistance to almost three million people in 14 northern and north eastern provinces of Afghanistan, during these difficult winter months."

Canada's support to WFP will assist approximately 1.2 million drought-affected people with food rations. In addition, approximately 42,000 families in urban areas will receive cash vouchers worth the equivalent value of 50 kilograms of wheat flour for six months.

This contribution of $13 million is in keeping with Canada's commitment to the Afghan people. Canada is currently one of the largest donors to the WFP in Afghanistan, and worldwide.
