Wishing for a Crash-Free Holiday Season

Wishing for a Crash-Free Holiday Season

ID: 99207

(firmenpresse) - OAKVILLE, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/21/11 -- Amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada are asking Canadians to take a moment to honour those who have been killed or injured in impaired driving crashes, and to make their own personal commitment to always drive sober.

"As Canadians treasure this time with family and friends and celebrate holiday traditions, we remember those who cannot be here with us and those whose lives have been forever changed by the senseless act of impaired driving," said MADD Canada National President Denise Dubyk.

Every year, hundreds of Canadians are killed and thousands are injured because people make the deadly decision to drive impaired.

"We are asking people to make a commitment to themselves and their families, that they will never drive impaired. If everyone does that, we can have a holiday season free from impaired driving crashes," said Ms. Dubyk. "That would truly be a gift."

Ms. Dubyk, whose son-in-law Darryl was killed in an impaired driving crash in 2000, knows all too well how difficult the holiday season can be for those who have lost loved ones.

"As the holidays drew near, our family had no comprehension of what it would or should be like, especially for Darryl's young sons," Ms. Dubyk said. "We tried our best to carry on with traditions that were meaningful to the boys but the reality was that nothing would be the same again."

"Allstate Canada and its agents want to wish Canadians everywhere a happy and healthy holiday season," said John O'Donnell, President and Chief Executive Officer, Allstate Insurance Company of Canada. "We hope that everyone takes extra care on the roads, and makes the choice to not drive impaired. This entirely preventable crime leads to tragic outcomes for far too many Canadians. Choose to keep you and yours safe. If you're going to be drinking, leave the driving to someone sober."

MADD Canada and Allstate Canada encourage Canadians to plan their holiday parties and events with road safety in mind:
