Minister Finley Appoints New Commissioner to the Canada Employment Insurance Commission

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/22/11 -- The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today announced the appointment of Ms. Mary-Lou Donnelly to the Canada Employment Insurance Commission as the Commissioner for Workers for a five-year term, effective January 16, 2012.

"Ms. Donnelly has earned a strong reputation in negotiating and leading labour discussions and has made significant contributions to the organizations she has served, particularly in Nova Scotia," said Minister Finley. "I am very pleased to appoint Ms. Donnelly as the next Commissioner for Workers of the Canada Employment Insurance Commission and am confident that Canadians will benefit from her skills and experience."

Ms. Donnelly is a former president of the Canadian Teachers' Federation and of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union. In addition, she is the founding member of the Coalition Against Workplace Violence, which includes the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, the Nova Scotia Nurses Union, the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union and the Nova Scotia Canadian Union of Public Employees. In this role, Ms. Donnelly helped bring about legislation to protect against emotional, verbal, and physical violence in the workplace. She has a keen interest in social justice issues from both a national and an international perspective, especially with respect to child poverty, human trafficking, and women's issues. Ms. Donnelly holds degrees from Acadia University (Bachelor of Arts), Dalhousie University (Bachelor of Education), and Saint Mary's University (Master of Arts), and has over 25 years experience in teaching and administration.

The Canada Employment Insurance Commission is a tripartite organization with representation from business, labour and the Government of Canada. It has a series of responsibilities pertaining to the delivery and administration of the Employment Insurance program.
