Youth Unemployment Creates Opportunities for Alternative Study and Career Choices, Report Guardian Jobs

(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 12/23/11 -- Ed Balls Shadow Chancellor and MP for Morley and Outwood, recently stated that long term youth unemployment has risen by 60%. Predicting that 2012 will highlight the coalition government's efforts at stemming the high unemployment figures, it appears that youth unemployment was at the top of Balls' plan A attack. With unemployment rife among school and college leavers, and graduates, what's next for those looking for jobs right now?
reveals that the future may not be as bleak as it seems.
What the economic crisis has forced is a rethink on apprenticeship, college and university access, social mobility and employability. Which; whilst causing a great deal of unease and even unrest (ergo the fees demo) also creates new opportunities. The Guardian's University league for example has always evaluated universities not just on course content but also on employability - how well the academic institution works with local businesses and enterprise in general to place under and qualified graduates in work. And the Guardian Jobs YouTube channel hosts an array of advice for graduates and school leavers looking for work. Featuring Sophie Relf head of marketing from Guardian Jobs, this particular offers positive and realistic advice for graduates from graduates, including ways to utilise social media in the big job search and the positives of taking an apprenticeship. The video also touches on the catch 22 situation facing young job seekers: How to get first work experience without any previous work experience.
And the dilemma of paid or unpaid internships isn't helped by the confusion surrounding work placements and internships. To clarify - though unpaid internships are illegal many not for profit, social enterprise and charity organisations hire voluntary workers. This means that regardless of age or qualification level these organisations have large numbers of staff on their books who are unpaid which is perfectly legal. However many under graduates and graduates are considering taking unpaid jobs to gather 'real' work experience and to have an opportunity to build a professional network of contacts. With up to 70 candidates applying for each entry level position competition is fierce. And the situation is exacerbated by economic conditions as many not for profit organisations are hiring greater numbers of voluntary workers because the demand for the organisations' services have gone up, and donations (revenue) have gone down. These two changes have meant that for inexperienced hires it's an extra tough market.
There are still many opportunities for graduates and school leavers. Apprenticeships, paid internships and TEFL courses are all viable routes into work that young people and career changers can take. TEFL qualified candidates for example can have opportunities to work in the UK and abroad and gain valuable work and life experience. Similarly, apprenticeships, corporate and vocational degrees (where organisations sponsor courses at university) are becoming popular choices for students and school or college leavers.
Guardian Jobs offer a range of TEFL, apprenticeship, internship and graduate job opportunities, the value of which cannot be lauded enough. Sophie Relf from Guardian Jobs explains: 'Candidates that are starting out in a new career or job do have an opportunity to take a fresh approach. These days it's relatively easy for jobseekers to follow companies or sectors that they are interested in working for or in. Secondly graduates will have an alumni network, and if they can also consider family friends that work they may have an opportunity to apply for unadvertised jobs. Thirdly most recruitment sites including Guardian Jobs offer an array of placement and job opportunities coupled with great career advice. Which means that; UK grads are most definitely not the lost generation.'
