Government Announces Changes to Employment Law for 2012

ID: 99708

(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 12/23/11 -- Each year, the government announces changes to the employment legislation which must be upheld by all UK employers. Jobs Today, one of the UK's leading recruiters for everything from careers in construction to , bring you five of the key points to take from the changes to employment for 2012.

Tribunal procedure - the employment tribunal procedure is expected to undergo a major review with significant changes to be introduced in early April. As it stands, a party is expected to pay a GBP 500 deposit order to the court if they wish to continue proceedings, however this is set to increase to GBP 1000 and the maximum amount that can be awarded in favour of a legally represented party doubles to GBP 20,000.

Unfair dismissal - perhaps the biggest change to employment rights is the increase in the qualifying period for employees to present an unfair dismissal case to a tribunal. Instead of one year, employees who feel they have been unfairly dismissed will now have two years to take their case to court, with the intention that employers and staff will have more time to resolve difficulties outside of the tribunal system.

Maternity and paternity leave - it has been confirmed that there will be an increase to the statutory pay for those on maternity and paternity leave, rising from GBP 128.73 a week to GBP 135.45 as of 1st April 2012.

Sick pay - the amount of pay an employee is entitled to when off work sick has also increased. From April 6th statutory sick pay will see an increment of GBP 4.25, rising to GBP 85.85 per week.

Redundancy payments - As of 1st February 2012, the maximum amount of pay used to calculate a redundancy payment has increased GBP 30 to GBP 430.

As we move into the New Year, more changes are expected to be announced, including proposals to reform the law on employment disputes and the introduction of employment tribunal fees.
