5 Tips for Hiring Plumbers

1. Compare. It's hard to class this as a tip because, as with most things in life, we compare prices as standard. Whether it's choosing a supermarket or an insurance provider, it makes sense to keep expenses to a minimum. The importance of comparing is no different, but it is more difficult since there is no real way to compare prices online, meaning you have to go back to the traditional method of calling around for quotes. Therefore, it is essential that you call at least 3 or 4 plumbers in your area and ask for a quote based on their hourly rate, as this will make the comparison much easier.
2. Buy your own fixtures. If you require new fixtures such as taps, a toilet or shower head, you are likely to save money by buying them from major retailers. Plumbers will save money on these items by buying them wholesale but will most likely charge you a higher amount to make additional profit from themselves. Depending on what it is you are buying it may not be worth it; for example, taps may only save you a couple of pounds, but for the larger items the savings can be quite substantial.
3. Reduce chargeable time. One of the simplest tips is to ensure that you keep the amount of time the plumber spends with you to an absolute minimum. Make sure he has easy access to the areas that may be causing problems and ensure you detail all the potential issues right from the start. Write down all the problems that you have had and the symptoms you are aware of - what's dripping where, what's not working etc.
4. Save water. Water-saving plumbing fixtures can often reduce consumption, which in itself saves money, but more importantly, it reduces the pressure on the plumbing and in turn the likelihood of the need for repair. By carefully selecting these fixtures you can ensure that you limit usage and damage. If you are having to repair certain features, try and find replacements that are more conservative and cost-effective.
5. Quote. This is similar to the first tip but is slightly different. If you are planning a full re-model of your kitchen, bathroom etc, carefully analyse exactly what you want. Once you have done this, you will be able to get a more detailed quote from plumbers and compare them in a more reliable way. You may even be able to get guarantees from the plumbers that the cost will not rise above that particular quote. By being detailed in the information you give, you can get a more detailed quote.
