Even though they take months of planning and years of commitment, weddings only last one day. That was Karen Kane’s lament after her daughter walked down the aisle July 12 of last year.

Even though they take months of planning and years of commitment, weddings only last one day. That was Karen Kane’s lament after her daughter walked down the aisle July 12 of last year.

“It’s like you set up an entire restaurant for just one day,” she said. She wished everyone could enjoy it for a little longer.

But Kane and her daughter, 2005 Prior Lake High School graduate Kelly Frederickson, can now relive that day every time they walk by a magazine stand.

Frederickson’s wedding has been captured on the latest issue of Dainty Obsessions, a Midwest bridal magazine. On the cover is an elegant photo of Kelly and Dylan Frederickson walking hand-in-hand - with, the magazine said, “the grace of true dignitaries” - across a grassy field. Glamorous comparisons to “The Great Gatsby” were made.

That’s no coincidence.

“I was inspired by the ring Dylan gave me,” Frederickson said. “He proposed to me with a really gorgeous, vintage-inspired, Art Deco ring.”

By the time she selected her dream dress - a slinky, oyster-colored 1920s dress - it was settled. The look would be a Golden Age garden party for the wedding party and their guests.

Surprisingly enough, this Gatsby wedding did not have a Gatsby budget. Kelly and Dylan could only afford a relatively small fund for a summery, outdoor venue, the dress, the food, the music, photography, flowers, decor and even the honeymoon. But that didn’t stop them from making the wedding as glamorous as Frederickson - or F. Scott Fitzgerald - pictured it.

That’s when Frederickson’s family and friends came to the rescue. Their venue was actually Frederickson’s cousin’s yard Eden Prairie. The entire family went on a vintage treasure hunt. Planters, baskets, mirrors and more were rustled up, polished and painted. Nothing matched, Kane said. Her daughter didn’t care. She loved the glamorous vintage effect and was touched by her mother's hard work to make it happen.

“My mom did 80 percent of it,” Frederickson said. Kane scoured garage sales all over Minneapolis, polished tarnished platters up to shine, hand-decorated matchboxes and hand-made bouquets. Lights were strung through every nearby tree. Frederickson’s brother pitched in by building an arbor for the ceremony. By the time they were done, their outdoor venue was glittering. A posse of Frederickson’s college friends provided the music and drink, and another, Kendra Heithoff Henseler, took the famed photos of the event.

The wedding over, the Fredericksons started their lives as a married couple in Chicago, Ill., where Dylan works as a veterinarian. Kane returned to her home in Edina. Both she and her daughter, Kane said, wished the moment could have stretched a bit further.

“We wished we could do it just one more day,” she said.

But the story wasn’t over. Henseler had originally asked Frederickson if she could submit her friend’s wedding photos to a bridal magazine. Frederickson learned around December that the photos had been accepted into Dainty Obsessions. At Christmas, she made the announcement to her family. The news was exciting enough at the time without knowing that they would be featured right on the front cover, which they found out months later, in February.

When the magazine suddenly appeared on the racks a couple of weeks ago, they were celebrating all over again. Friends and family were spotting them everywhere, too.

“The phone was going crazy,” Kane said.

“People keep sending me pictures of the magazine on racks in Target,” Frederickson said.

It’s a sweet way, she said, to remember - and it’s giddy and odd to see her picture used as the profile image for Dainty Obsession’s Facebook page. But there’s something else important about seeing her special day in print.

“I want all the hard work my mom and my friends did, and all of their love, to be shown in such a public way,” she said.

And her mother did send her three copies of the magazine - one for their home, one for Dylan's veterinary clinic and one for their future children: to have and to hold.Read more at:www.marieprom.co.uk/short-prom-dresses
