Hunger for raw materials caused by climate change

Hunger for raw materials caused by climate change

(PresseBox) - Electromobility and renewable energies are growth markets, and they reduce greenhouse gas emissions thanks to the right raw materials.

According to estimates, the global market for lithium-ion batteries will grow by around 30 percent. Lithium-ion batteries are not only installed in electric vehicles, but also in energy storage systems and a wide range of portable devices. Around 80 percent of batteries are installed in vehicles. Around 15 million electric vehicles are expected to be on the roads in Germany by 2030. Unfortunately, the expansion of electromobility is still progressing too slowly. As the Federal Environment Agency has calculated, there will probably only be 8.2 million electric cars. However, electromobility is just one of several areas with the help of which CO2 neutrality is to be achieved. The heart of electric cars is the battery. Electromobility has sparked a veritable hunger for raw materials.

The necessary raw materials are often extracted from the ground under very problematic conditions. And while a mid-range car requires around five to eight kilograms of lithium, this amount often doubles in the higher-end segment. Lithium-ion batteries also contain cobalt, nickel, manganese and graphite. The hunger for raw materials can be seen in the increased quantities mined and also in the price trend for lithium and cobalt, for example. Lithium can be found in the lithium triangle of Bolivia, Chile and Argentina as well as in Australia, China and the Congo. There is also lithium in Canada.

Targa Exploration - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/targa-exploration-corp/ - has 15 promising lithium projects in Quebec, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Manitoba.

Lithium, cobalt and rare earths are in the projects of U.S. Critical Metals - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/us-critical-metals-corp/ -. These are located in Nevada, Montana and Idaho.
