Southern Crane to Lift Holiday Spirits by Lowering Giant Acorn at 21st Annual First Night Raleigh

(firmenpresse) - RALEIGH, NC -- (Marketwire) -- 12/29/11 -- For the 21st straight year, Raleigh's Southern Crane will help the City of Oaks celebrate the New Year by lowering the iconic giant acorn at First Night Raleigh. The city's symbol, made of 1,250 pounds of copper and steel, was dented during an April tornado, but Raleigh officials say it will be repaired in time for the annual celebration.
Making sure everything goes smoothly once again will be a crane operator from Southern Crane, which has hoisted and lowered the acorn every year since the inaugural First Night Raleigh, held Dec. 31, 1991. The party takes place in City Plaza, where the iconic acorn is cheered during its midnight descent.
New Year's Eve just wouldn't be the same without the acorn drop, said Earl Johnson, III, president of Southern Crane.
"Celebrating New Year's Eve in Raleigh has become a tradition for the entire Southern Crane family," Johnson said. "Some people only see the acorn once every year. We're pleased to hear it will look as good as new for the big party."
The acorn is more than 10 feet tall and is displayed in Moore Square throughout the year. It was created by sculptor David Benson to celebrate the city's 1992 Bicentennial and Raleigh's nickname as "The City of Oaks."

For Southern Crane, this has been a busy holiday season. In recent weeks, the company also hoisted into place the large chillers used to freeze the Winterfest ice rink in downtown Raleigh, and became the first-ever crane to participate in the Raleigh Christmas Parade, to the delight of many children in attendance.
Southern Crane is a comprehensive crane and rigging service provider, and a wholly owned subsidiary of Southern Industrial Constructors, one of the largest private employers in N.C. Southern Crane advocates nationally for industry safety standards and requires all its crane operators to be certified by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators. Founded in 1962 in Raleigh, N.C., the company also has locations in Charlotte and Wilmington, N.C., and Columbia, S.C.
First Night Raleigh is presented by Artsplosure -- The Raleigh Arts Festival, Inc., a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to produce high-quality annual festivals that celebrate excellence in the performing and visual arts; to promote and bring recognition to national, regional, and local artists; and to bring artists and the larger community together to improve the quality of life and cultural environment.
