Government of Canada Supports the Preservation of Notre Dame des Victoires/Lac La Biche Mission National Historic Site of Canada

(firmenpresse) - LAC LA BICHE, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/09/12 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Brian Jean, Member of Parliament for Fort McMurray-Athabasca, today announced that the Government of Canada will be investing in conservation work at Notre Dame des Victoires/Lac La Biche Mission National Historic Site.
"I am very pleased to announce this funding for a historic site that will continue to attract tourism to Lac La Biche," said Mr. Jean. "This conservation project ensures that our government is contributing to a community infrastructure initiative that recognizes the past, while at the same time, invests in the future."
Established in 1853, the site became one of the major Oblate missions in the West. With the arrival of the Grey Nuns in 1862 and the use of local labour, the mission was self-sufficient and flourishing by 1870, and began serving local Cree and Dene converts, as well as the local Metis population. An industrial school was opened at the mission in 1885 in response to Dominion government policy. Due to its geographical location, the site became the hub of an important portage route which ran overland from St. Boniface to the Mission and from the Athabasca-Mackenzie river system to Fort Good Hope.
Through Parks Canada's National Historic Sites Cost-Sharing Program, the Government of Canada will be contributing up to $14,450 for a preparatory assistance project that will involve the completion of a conservation and maintenance plan.
"One of our Government's objectives is to inspire Canadians to develop strong and meaningful connections with Canada's national treasures," said Minister Kent. "Our national historic sites are vital to our history, our identity as Canadians, and our tourism industry. By investing in them and by building lasting relationships with the community groups that operate them, we ensure that they will continue to help support local economies and encourage more Canadians to explore and discover our national heritage."
"The Lac La Biche Mission Historical Society continually strives to follow the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada. The Cost-Sharing Program from Parks Canada will enable us through architectural studies to know how to proceed to follow our goals of proper care to preserve, restore and interpret the historic significance of the site," said Les Biollo, Chairman of the Society.
The Cost-Sharing Program reflects the Government of Canada's dedication to preserve Canada's heritage through funding towards the conservation of our national historic sites. Parks Canada is pleased to continue its efforts to ensure that Canada's historic and natural heritage is protected for the enjoyment, education and appreciation of all Canadians, today and in the future.
