Help Horses at Risk Get a Second Chance at Life

(firmenpresse) - ALACHUA, FL -- (Marketwire) -- 01/09/12 -- The Retirement Home for Horses at Mill Creek, a nonprofit sanctuary for old, abused, and abandoned horses, is feeling the economic pinch.

For almost four decades, the farm has been saving hundreds of horses from abuse, starvation, neglect and slaughter, many arriving sick, emaciated, lame and frightened. Newly rescued horses arrive on a regular basis.

"The task of providing a refuge for these noble animals is not an easy one," says Peter Gregory, who along with wife, Mary, founded the farm in 1984 with their life savings. "Caring for the horses and operating the farm is costly," Peter notes. The sanctuary costs approximately $275,000 a year to function. Relying solely on individual contributions, each horse requires about $2,000 per year for food and veterinary care.

Now in their 80s, Peter and Mary still live at the farm where their labors begin at sunrise and end after sunset. They currently care for over 130 horses with the help of volunteers.

Among the farm's "retirees" are two horses from the Fort Carson Mounted Color Guard in Colorado. Master Sgt. Houdini and Sgt. 1st Class Possum arrived with Certificates of Achievement signed with "best wishes" by Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama.

In addition to individual donations, Mill Creek offers an ADOPT-A-HORSE program. By making a yearly donation of $480 ($40 monthly), you receive a Certificate of Adoption along with photos and information about the horse. All contributions are tax deductible.

"It is through the compassion and generosity of our donors and volunteers that enable Mill Creek farm to provide care for so many horses in need," says Peter.

With only two carrots as admission, Mill Creek Farm, an education for visitors of all ages, is open to the public every Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm.
