Big-Data Expert Charged With Overseeing Adoption and Relevancy of Alpine Products, and Thought Leadership in Agile Analytics Arena

(firmenpresse) - SAN MATEO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/10/12 -- Alpine Data Labs, developer of the first predictive modeling solution for Big Data, today announced that it has hired Steven Hillion as the company's chief product officer. Hillion, who will be based in San Mateo reporting directly to CEO Anderson Wong, comes to Alpine Data Labs with a highly successful track record in the field of data science, as a developer of analytics applications and, most recently, as vice president of analytics at Greenplum -- the company that incubated Alpine Data Labs and is now a division of EMC.

As chief product officer, Hillion will be responsible for managing Alpine's product strategy, including marketing and evangelizing products, communicating product benefits to the public, and making sure products are competitively positioned to meet agile analytics requirements for the Big Data era. In short, according to Wong, Steven is chartered to own and drive Alpine's product adoption, relevancy and thought leadership.

Hillion points to the opportunity to combine the proven scalability of Alpine's solutions with a strong emphasis on ease of use. The long-term goal, he says, is to encourage broader adoption of data mining and predictive modeling -- a challenge in the current marketplace where advanced analytics solutions have remained largely out of reach for many companies, not only because they come with a hefty initial price tag, but because their complexity often requires teams of highly specialized external resources and the purchase of costly proprietary models. As a result, countless gems of potentially market-shifting insight have remained beyond the reach of the masses. Hillion will be charged with addressing this issue, essentially democratizing Big Data Analytics to help enterprises adopt tools and technologies to uncover the value that resides in their data.

"The timing of Steven Hillion's move to join our team could not be better," said Wong. "His recent experience on the forefront of one of the most dynamic companies in the Big Data field combined with his extensive background in developing analytical applications gives him a skill set that's exactly what will help us take the next step towards breaking down the walls between organizations and the power of their data."

Before joining Alpine Data Labs, Hillion served for two years as vice president of analytics at Greenplum, where he worked closely with existing customers and prospects to demonstrate the analytical capabilities of Greenplum's technology -- specifically, the Greenplum Analytics Lab. Before that, he was vice president of engineering at M-Factor Inc., developing predictive modeling solutions for consumer products companies. Earlier in his career, he served as director of engineering at the Silicon Valley firms QRS Corp., KANA Software and Siebel/Scopus. He earned a doctorate in mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, and was a King Charles I scholar at Oxford University.

Alpine Data Labs has developed the first solution for Big Data predictive insight, making it faster, easier and less complex to achieve predictive insights from the massive datasets companies can now collect and store due to declining storage costs. Incubated within Greenplum (acquired by EMC in 2010) and founded by an experienced team with strong ties to China, Alpine Data Labs has Big Data in its DNA. The company is based in Silicon Valley and is backed by Sierra Ventures, Mission Ventures, Sumitomo Corporation and Stanford University.
