Health Canada: Note to Editors

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 01/10/12 -- Health Canada today released the January 2012 issue of the Canadian Adverse Reaction Newsletter (CARN).
This edition is themed around children (aged 0-18 years) and the importance of reporting adverse reactions in this age group.
It contains an article on a suspected association between second-generation antipsychotics (also known as atypical antipsychotics), and cardiometabolic adverse reactions such as weight gain, high blood pressure and high blood sugar.
It also includes an article on the limited availability of scientific data for drugs prescribed in children, along with an announcement highlighting research projects being undertaken by the Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network to increase the evidence available for drugs used in this age group.
Finally, the issue contains an overview of adverse reaction reports received by Health Canada involving children in 2010, as well as a quarterly summary of communications to health professionals and the public.
