The U.S. Energy Department says that the United States holds an estimated 2,543 trillion cubic feet of gas -- enough to meet domestic demand for more than a century at current rates of consumption. Shale gas now accounts for 34 percent of total U.S. natural gas output, has created hundreds of thousands of jobs and is expected to significantly lower imports of fossil fuels. Bloomberg recently reported that shale formations in China hold an estimated 1,275 trillion cubic feet of gas.
