Roosevelt Vet in Brewster Offers Laparoscopic Spay Procedure

"In traditional spaying, we must make an incision several inches long and then reach in and remove the ovarian ligament. Since we have no way of seeing inside the incision, we have to feel our way through the procedure, and inevitably there is some bruising of the abdominal wall. This causes the animal a certain amount of pain and also extends the recovery time as the incision heals."

The surgeon makes a few tiny incisions to snake the tube into the body instead of having to cut the larger incision called for by traditional surgery. The surgeon works to the image on a monitor screen that receives the camera signal, permitting a clear view of even the smallest internal maneuvers. When applied to spay surgery, the precision of this method results in a cleanly-performed sterilization that heals more quickly and results in 65 percent less pain than traditional spaying.
The efficiency of laparoscopic spay surgery has other benefits as well, according to Dr. Glassman. "The pet is subjected to a shorter period of anesthesia, which is always preferable," says the veterinarian. "The entire procedure takes less time and therefore causes the pet less emotional stress."
She adds that the postoperative period is less complicated for pet and owner alike: "A traditional spay surgery leaves a fairly large incision that can reopen or become infected if the pet is allowed to run and play or lick the incision. This may lead to multiple follow-up visits and expense. The tiny incisions made during laparoscopic surgery need considerably less follow-up care from the ."
