Filipina-American Songwriter, Liza Pesnell, Has Great Chart Success in 2011
(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 01/12/12 -- Liza Manaloto Pesnell; a Filipina-American songwriter for her band, Cutting Edge, had great success at radio stations around the world in 2011, including five songs that charted on various charts in the U.S. Cutting Edge is a band based in Phoenix, Arizona and was formed by Liza Pesnell, her husband, David Pesnell, and William Zimmerman in 1998.
Cutting Edge has enjoyed great success at radio stations in the United States and around the world for the past 12 years, a feat that is almost unheard of by an indie band. The band had several songs chart including "Without You," "It's Time," "Abuse of Power," "Love Police," "Judas of D.C.," "If The Walls Could Talk," "Every Time I Try," "Your Love Is My Oxygen" and others. All the songs were written by Liza Pesnell or with William Zimmerman. She has written over 40 songs for Cutting Edge, and has a music catalog of over 140 that have been recorded. The album "Humonously Yours" was produced by Liza Pesnell and had six songs charted. According to Jeffrey Beals, a Former Partner of the William Morris Agency, he knows of very few major recording artists to have accomplished what Cutting Edge and Liza Pesnell has done. More remarkable is that the band has its own record label, oversees its own distribution, radio promotion and handles its own publishing.
In 2011, the band had five songs written by Liza Pesnell that charted in the U.S. and received radio airplay around the world. Cutting Edge also made history in 2011 by being the first 'indie' band to have two songs debut inside the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot Single Sales Charts during the same week. The song "Without You" peaked at #7 and "If The Walls Could Talk" peaked at #11. Both songs remained in the charts for over six weeks and both songs also charted inside the Top 20 of the Canadian Radio Charts. "Without You" also hit #1 at internet radio for six weeks, with "If The Walls Could Talk" being #2 for two of those weeks, giving Cutting Edge and Liza Pesnell the top 2 songs at internet radio. Liza Pesnell is the first Filipino-American songwriter, and maybe the only songwriter to accomplish this feat (Billboard does not know of any other songwriter who has done this). Cutting Edge charted three other songs in 2011, including "Your Love Is My Oxygen," "Let Your Body Rock" and "She Wore Red." Besides working with Cutting Edge and writing songs with William Zimmerman; Liza Pesnell has also written songs with Chris The Greek, Ricky Ric, Giuseppe D., Johnny Hdz and others.
It was after her great success with the album "Humongously Yours" and as she and Cutting Edge began to record their next album, "The Big 14 N' More," that Liza Pesnell passed away from a long battle against cancer. Everyone in Cutting Edge was so devastated that it would be two years before the band could finish the album. Cutting Edge has not performed live since she passed away. Since her passing, the band has recorded three new albums featuring songs by Liza Pesnell; "Censored By U.S. Government," "Cutting Edge Goes To College" and the new live album being released at the end of January, "Cutting Edge Released...'LIVE,'" which features songs recorded during the band's first concert tour. Liza Manaloto Pesnell was born in Angeles City, Philippines and lived in Los Angeles, CA and Tucson, AZ.
The following six songs are the best songs that reflect the wide range of songwriting by Liza Pesnell, including love ballads and protest songs. I have included a little bio on each song and at the end of each write up, a link to where the song can be purchased on itunes.
WITHOUT YOU: From the album "Humongously Yours," "Without You" is probably one of the more amazing songs in music history. This song is a love ballad about her relationship with her husband David and was released to commercial radio in the U.S. in 1999. The song climbed the R&R charts and peaked at #23. Two years later over 200 college radio stations began to play "Without You" and before the band knew it, commercial radio stations began to play it again and this time, it peaked at #16 on commercial charts in the U.S. It was the first time in history a song charted twice for an 'indie' band, but the most amazing aspect of the song is that 12 years after its initial release, the song one again climbed the charts in 2011 and the song charted a third time, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot Single Sales Chart. No indie band or songwriter has accomplished this twice, let along three times. So not only did "Without You" make music history by charting three times for Cutting Edge, but along with "If The Walls Could Talk," both songs debuted on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales Charts inside the top 20 the same week, another feat no indie band or songwriter had ever accomplished.
LOVE POLICE: "Love Police" was released to radio stations in 1999 and also went on to accomplish what no other song by an indie artist had ever accomplished, it remained inside the top 30 of the commercial radio charts for 10 months and received heavy airplay at college radio stations. No other indie recording artists and only a few major recording artists have accomplished this feat. Two remixes of the song by Ricky Ric and Giuseppe D. also charted at radio and in nightclubs in the U.S. The song also received radio airplay in Europe, Australia and Japan. The song was co-written with her long time writing partner, William Zimmerman. "Love Police" is a song about losing a relationship and calling the 'Love Police' to find the one who broke your heart.
EVERY TIME I TRY: From the album "The Big 14 N' More," "Every Time I Try" became the first song to hit #1 on international radio charts for Cutting Edge and for Liza as a songwriter. A love ballad, "Every Time I Try" peaked at #6 at commercial radio stations in the U.S. It was another song that she wrote about her relationship with David. A remix with Chris The Greek also did well in the clubs and mix shows in the U.S. and around the world.
IT'S TIME: The song only charted in the top 50 of commercial rock stations, but it is included as it is the only song by Cutting Edge that has Liza Pesnell on vocals. You can hear her singing "It's Time" in the background. It is a shame she did not record more herself.
IF THE WALLS COULD TALK: Another song from the classic album "Humongously Yours," "If The Walls Could Talk" is a funky rock song dealing with what the politicians really do behind closed doors in Washington D.C., and how they ignore the needs of the people that elected them to office. Not only did the song do well at college radio but, just like the song "Without You," twelve years after its original release, the song debuted inside the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot Single Sales Charts and peaked at #11. The song also received excellent international radio airplay.
LOSING YOU: "Losing You" is the most emotionally powerful song recorded by Cutting Edge. Liza wrote the lyrics to "Losing You" three days before she past away from cancer. "Losing You," is a song about her passing away and watching David, her family and friends from above. A ballad, many people in the recording industry feel that the song is a powerful, major hit song; but it is also a song that may never be released as a single to radio according to sources close the band. The band recorded the song two years after her death and various individuals involved with Cutting Edge, along with David Pesnell and William Zimmerman, actually had to leave the studio when the vocals were being recorded for the song; it was too emotional for them to stay. William Zimmerman has never listened to song after it was mixed and mastered and the band has never performed the song in concert. According to guitarist Jeffrey Carolus, "Losing You" is just too difficult for the band to perform emotionally and no one in Cutting Edge wants to perform the song live. According to Jeffrey Beals (former partner of the William Morris Agency) "Cutting Edge will probably never release the song to radio, so that they will not have to do it live if they should ever decided to perform live again." One source I spoke to in the music industry stated, "It is a shame that the band does not go ahead and release the song; 'Losing You' is a massive hit song waiting to happen."
According to a couple of sources inside the music industry in New York and various Cutting Edge Fan Club sites; there are discussions that Cutting Edge may tour this year and radio stations in Boston, New York and Atlanta say "it's a done deal." Sources state that a tour by Cutting Edge would be the biggest indie concert tour in years. I can think of no better tribute to Liza Pesnell then to have Cutting Edge perform her music live.
