(firmenpresse) - CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 01/16/12 -- Chartwells-Thompson Hospitality, the major food provider for Chicago Public Schools (CPS), donated 1,000 free lunches for students participating in the Safe Haven, Safe Holiday program at its culminating event at DuSable Campus on Friday, January 6th. Safe Haven, Safe Holiday, an extension of CPS's Safe Haven program, is a partnership between CPS and the faith community which provides students with structured and productive activities in a safe and secure environment. The program served almost 1,000 children ages 5-17 for two weeks at 40 faith institutions throughout Chicago while CPS schools were closed for the winter holiday break.

Chartwells-Thompson has donated thousands of free lunches in the past for students participating in the Safe Haven programs. Through this program, students from kindergarten through 12th grade have a place to go when Chicago Public Schools are not in session. Chartwells-Thompson staff provided food and served nutritious meals to students, many of whom come from the city's most under-resourced neighborhoods.

The lunch menu included pulled BBQ turkey sandwiches, baked beans, corn on the cob, and fresh fruit.

"It's great to see the Safe Haven, Safe Holiday student participants eating and enjoying the meals we served," said Bob Bloomer, regional vice president for Chartwells-Thompson Hospitality. "With 85.7 percent of CPS students eligible for free or reduced priced meals, we recognize the importance of the wholesome meals while school is not in session."
