CORRECTION FROM SOURCE: Leon Mugesera, Inadmissible for Crimes Against Humanity, Misrepresentation and Criminality, Handed Over to Rwandan Authorities

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) today confirmed the handover of Leon Mugesera to Rwandan authorities on January 24.

"The CBSA and the Department of Justice worked tirelessly on this case" said Luc Portelance, President of the CBSA. "I'm pleased that the case has resulted in a removal of another accused war criminal from Canadian soil."

Mugesera was found to be inadmissible for crimes against humanity, misrepresentation and criminality (incitement to genocide). He was ordered deported in 1996 and has unsuccessfully been making his case in front of numerous courts and tribunals for 16 years.

The CBSA is committed to ensuring Canada is not a safe haven for people who were involved in serious acts of war crimes or crimes against humanity. It is the CBSA's responsibility to enforce the law. The removal of inadmissible individuals is key to maintaining the integrity of the immigration program and to ensuring fairness for those who come to this country lawfully.
