Ministers Ashfield and Shea Present 2011 National Recreational Fisheries Award to PEI Volunteer

(firmenpresse) - CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND -- (Marketwire) -- 01/25/12 -- The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Gateway and the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue today presented Daryl Guignion with a Recreational Fisheries Award.
"I am proud to be a part of a government that recognizes the hard work and dedication of Canadian volunteers," said Minister Ashfield. "The Recreational Fisheries Awards is one way we can thank those Canadians who show tireless commitment to building sustainable fisheries in their communities."
"As Mr. Guignion is committed to ensuring that recreational fisheries are preserved, so is our Government," said Minister Shea. "We are proud to honour the efforts of such dedicated volunteers who make such an important contribution to this important tradition."
Daryl Guignion is an inspirational educator and environmental activist who has devoted much of his own time for three decades to bettering the recreational fishery on Prince Edward Island. He helped found the Island Nature Trust and the Morell River Management Co-op, and has lobbied over many years for effective legislation and environmental practices to conserve waterways for trout and salmon.
As an educator, he trained many teachers who, in turn educated their students about conservation and preservation of the environment. His work to establish the only legislated Conservation Zone in Prince Edward Island along the Morell River is a highlight among the many projects to which he has contributed. By combining his scientific research background, his interest in recreational fish management, his educational capabilities and his ability to see projects through, Mr. Guignion has contributed vastly to the conservation and enhancement of the recreational fishery in Prince Edward Island.
Canada's National Recreational Fisheries Awards were created in 1989 to recognize outstanding contributions by individuals and organizations in areas such as recreational community leadership, restoring and enhancing fisheries and fish habitat or promoting conservation and sustainable recreational fishing.
