"We are proud to offer the community ," said Dr. Stephens. "I have been working with horses and large farm animals for over four decades, and enjoy working with horse owners to provide quality wellness care."
As part of its equine wellness program, the animal clinic provides preventive medicine, annual health exams, vaccinations and Coggins Testing. Animal Medical Clinic is a federal lab for Coggins testing. The Coggins test examines a blood sample from a horse to diagnose if the horse has contracted Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), also sometimes referred to as swamp fever. Equine Infectious Anemia is a viral infection that does not currently have a vaccine or a known cure.
"As EIA does not currently have a vaccine or a cure, it is important to diagnose horses with this disease to protect other horses from contracting EIA," said Dr. Stephens. "Most horses will not die from this disease, but instead be asymptomatic carriers. Horse owners can take steps to manage the health of an infected horse and protect their other horses from infection. We recommend yearly Coggins testing to all horse owners."
