(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 02/06/12 -- The Executive of the National Pensioners and Senior Citizens Federation (NPSCF) gather today in Ottawa on the eve of their annual lobby of Members of Parliament.

"We are shocked by recent developments that will make matters worse for pensioners," said Federation President Barry Thorsteinson. "Retirement security for our children and grandchildren is under attack."

Thorsteinson says, "We are very disappointed by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's refusal to meet with us." And he says, "A meeting with the Minister of State for Seniors, Alice Wong, was cancelled at the last minute so she could attend a photo-op in China." He adds, "The meeting with Minister Wong had been confirmed for Tuesday afternoon and we were counting on it."

Besides pension concerns, Thorsteinson says seniors are facing a wide range of issues which include poverty, housing and health care, just to name a few. He accuses the Harper Government of ignoring the concerns of seniors in need.

The NPSCF Executive has arranged meetings with Official Opposition MP's, Liberal Caucus MP's and the Parliamentary Secretary (Finance), Hon. Shelly Glover throughout the day tomorrow.

The NPSCF has 350 affiliates across Canada and represents close to a million seniors.

Thorsteinson states that the NPSCF is the only Pan-Canadian Seniors organization that sets policy in an annual convention with open and democratic debate. He says, "Our priorities for 2012, which we will take to Parliament Hill tomorrow, were determined at our Convention last October in Charlottetown, PEI."

"We are here to lobby on behalf of all seniors," says Thorsteinson. "And we will not be discouraged by the Harper Government's lack of interest in what we have to say."
