(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 02/22/12 -- U.S.English Chairman Mauro E. Mujica today applauded officials in Frederick County, Maryland for their support in the passage of a measure to make English the official language of county government.

"Declaring English the official language of government is a step in the right direction to putting non-English speakers on the path to success," Chairman Mujica said. "Rather than creating the illusion of an English-optional society, English as the official language of government sends the message that assimilation is necessary to fully participate in society. When immigrants maintain their native language and heritage, but also learn English and assimilate to American society, everyone benefits."

U.S.English testified in support of the ordinance at a public hearing on Tuesday, where county officials supported the vote by a margin of 4 to 1.

"While this week's action in Frederick County is commendable, Frederick County is only the first county in Maryland to adopt Official English," Chairman Mujica added. "With 31 states having named English their official language, I hope this is just the start of a renewed push to make English the language of other counties and states, in an effort to increase the economic success of immigrants."

U.S.English, Inc. is the nation's oldest and largest non-partisan citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States.
