(firmenpresse) - MALIBU, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/23/12 -- In light of recent events due to the tragic and untimely death of the legendary pop-diva Whitney Houston, there has been a firestorm of coverage speculating as to the cause of Whitney's passing. While the evidence at this point is inconclusive, some say that her death may have been caused by a combination of alcohol and prescription drugs. While the actual cause of death may be unknown, it is known that Whitney struggled with marijuana, cocaine, alcohol, and possibly prescription drugs at different points in her life.

Regrettably, this tragedy was witnessed in the not-too-distant past with Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, and Heath Ledger. These celebrities are examples of how an overdose can be deadly, regardless of whether the overdose was caused by a prescription drug, an illegal drug, alcohol or various combinations of the three -- which can often be the case. "Some have the misconception that just because a drug is legal means it's not dangerous," says Pax Prentiss, cofounder of located in Malibu, California. "This is not the truth. Legal drugs can be just as deadly as illegal drugs if they're abused."

Indeed, prescription drug abuse runs rampant in America. According to the article "Prescription Drug Abuse," published by the , 7 million Americans abused prescription drugs in 2010. The gravity of the situation does not seem to be fully realized, but hopefully this article will bring some awareness to the problem. In another article "Drug deaths now outnumber traffic fatalities in the U.S.," published by the Los Angeles Times, drug deaths exceeded motor vehicle accidents as a cause of death in 2009, killing at least 37,485 people nationwide. Even if these statistics are inaccurate to a degree, it should be clear that an exceedingly large portion of the population is affected in some way by the horrors of addiction. It seems that part of the issue is that these fatalities are common, and go unnoticed for the most part, until they claim the life of a famous individual. Clearly, nobody is immune to the debilitating effects of addiction. And while everyone deserves happiness, everyone must take seriously steps in preventing or seeking if they or someone they know is afflicted with this terrible dependency.

Fortunately, there is a profuse abundance of treatment facilities across the country, including Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura. While the former is a luxury facility, the latter is an accessible rehabilitation center, both of which emphasize quality holistic treatment in southern California. "What happened to Whitney was terrible," Pax concludes, "but despite these very unfortunate events, there is hope for people suffering with dependency issues. Alcohol and prescription drug abuse doesn't have to end in tragedy, but seeking treatment is necessary in a lot of cases." Although both Passages Treatment Centers have always treated prescription drug addiction, it has formally announced its pledge to increase awareness and efforts to fight . These leave positive implications for the future, to be sure. But the first step for anyone is to look into treatment options and get help. Substance abuse is life threatening, even if the drug is legal or prescribed by a doctor. The more awareness we can bring to this issue the more we can start to make a positive change. If you know someone who is suffering please encourage them to get help.
