(firmenpresse) - PRESTON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 03/02/12 -- Anyone who has the mildest of hearing loss could see their chances of falling over or losing their footing by up to three times.

According to a recent study by Action on Hearing Loss, anyone who suffers even mild hearing loss has the likelihood of falling or losing their balance triple. Even for moderate deafness, they could see the odds of an accident double.

These findings showed that people who had a 25 decibel hearing loss, which is classified as mild, were almost three times more likely to have an accident whilst walking than those people who don't suffer from a mild hearing loss.

A report last year found that falls in the UK could be costing the NHS up to GBP 4.6 million a day, a staggering GBP 1.7 billion per year.

Also figures from Action on Hearing Loss, the leading hearing loss charity in the UK, show that two million people in the United Kingdom have a but only 1.4 million people use them on a regular basis. Also a further 4 million people in the UK who don't have a hearing aid would benefit from wearing one.

Speaking about these latest figures, Crystal Rolfe Head of the South East Region and Senior Audiologist at the charity Action on Hearing Loss said: 'The functions of hearing and balance are both located in the inner ear - in the cochlea and semi-circular canals. There are some conditions in which people have both hearing and balance problems which can cause falls i.e. Meniere's disease. There is still much research that is needed into the link between hearing and balance.'
