After close examination of the recently published Dr. Oz-approved shopping list, Mira and Jayson Calton, the authors of the bestselling book, "NAKED CALORIES; Discover How Micronutrients Can Maximize Weight Loss, Prevent Disease and Enhance Your Life" (by Changing Lives Press), are concerned with several of the ingredients contained in some of the foods included on this list.
The Caltons have made a series of public service short films highlighting the problematic foods, but have not heard back from the Dr. Oz camp, as to whether or not these foods will be removed from the list and replaced with healthier choices. With only two of the 99 foods examined thus far, the Caltons have already uncovered nine worrisome ingredients, including BHA and BHT, ingredients, which are banned in England and Japan and are listed by the state of California as carcinogens. MSG (under the name hydrolyzed corn protein), an excitotoxin known to cause vomiting, irregular heartbeat, migraines, and seizures in some people, was also found as an approved ingredient.
The Caltons explain, "Since the list was approved by Dr. Oz, millions of individuals who are looking to lose weight will think the ingredients in these diet foods are safe and effective." The problem is that aside from the BHA, BHT and MSG, many of the foods also contain sugar, dextrose, evaporated cane juice, and brown rice syrup, all of which are just forms of sugar. The Caltons were also surprised to see brown rice syrup included in the approved list of ingredients, the very ingredient Dr. Oz himself has recently exposed on national television for its potentially dangerous levels of arsenic.
"Our intention is not to attack Dr. Oz, or any of the brands mentioned on his list," say the Caltons. "Our goal is to educate the public and bring awareness to these potentially harmful ingredients. In turn, we hope that Dr. Oz will revise and remove these foods from his list."
