(firmenpresse) - WHITEHORSE, YUKON -- (Marketwire) -- 03/05/12 -- The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) and Minister of Health today announced support to increase capacity and training, promote investment, and improve operational efficiency in the mining industry in the Northwest Territories and Yukon.

"The Government of Canada recognizes that improving job skills for Northerners ensures that mines have the workers they need locally and that better-quality jobs stay in the community," said Minister Aglukkaq. "Attracting investments in this important sector will help contribute to sustainable jobs and growth in the North."

"Yukon First Nations know the importance of being well-informed and engaged in order to participate in the growing resource industry," said Yukon MP Ryan Leef. "The mining industry contributes to economic development that benefits Yukoners and all Canadians."

"We are most appreciative of Minister Aglukkaq's and CanNor's recognition and financial support to purchase tools for teaching. We are working with the people of the Deh Cho and Canadian Zinc to bring much needed training-to-employment programs to this region of the NWT. The jobs that the Prairie Creek mine will bring to the communities in the Deh Cho will reinvigorate the communities there." said Ted Blondin, Chairperson of the Mine Training Society.

"The Yukon Gold Mining Alliance is very pleased to receive funding from CanNor as this will ensure that Yukon's message of our outstanding opportunities for mining investment will continue to be delivered to the right audiences for another year," said Rob McIntyre, Chair, Yukon Gold Mining Alliance.

"The Council of Yukon First Nations is appreciative of the funding support provided for Yukon First Nation Chiefs to attend the Mining Round Up in Vancouver and the Prospector and Developers Association of Canada International Convention, Trade Show and Investors Exchange this month. These opportunities allow Yukon First Nations to participate in the economic development of the Yukon territory. Yukon First Nations network with the world's mining industry, share information regarding our Land Claim Agreements and form partnerships where opportunities may exist in our Traditional Territories. This is a positive move forward in working with other Governments in building strong working relationships with Yukon First Nation Governments," stated Grand Chief Ruth Massie.

In the Northwest Territories, the Mine Training Society will use CanNor's investments to purchase equipment for a centre to train local workers in the Deh Cho region for career opportunities at the Canadian Zinc Prairie Creek mine.

CanNor funding will assist the Yukon Gold Mining Alliance to promote Yukon to investors in the mining sector at the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) Convention and to promote the Yukon Mining Investment Conference in Whitehorse in September 2012.

These investments are made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.

SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
