The first international Conference of the VDI "Conventional Power Plant Technologies of the Next Generation" in Hamburg, Germany on June 20th and 21st, will focus on the theme of new perspectives for thermal power plants

(PresseBox) - The European Union has committed itself to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases by 80 to 95 percent by the year 2050 compared to the 1990 levels. Apart from the transport sector this affects the production of energy in particular. As renewable forms of energy are not continually available, conventional power plant technology continues to play an important role in the energy production mix. The first international VDI-Conference "Conventional Power Plant Technologies of the Next Generation" in Hamburg, Germany on June 20th and 21st, will present perspectives in this field of development.
At this meeting, hosted by the VDI Wissensforum (expert forum), participants of all branches will be able to discuss with experts from the fields of power plant operating, plant and component engineering, system development, planning and research, about the current challenges in power plant technology. Chairman and technical director of the conference is Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hartmut Spiethoff, Head of the Institute of Energy Systems at the Technical University of Munich.
The challenges, which power plant operators face in the attempt to increase flexibility and decrease emissions, will be the central theme of experts from BET and EnBW Energy.
Marcus Scholz, Marketing Director of GE Energy in Madrid, Spain, will give a report on the especially high flexibility in the operation of combined cycle power plants.
Patrick Savat from Laborelec GdF Suez in Linkebeek, Belgium, will speak about the possibilities and limitations that are to be considered when power plants burn coal and biomass, with special emphasis on coal firing and slagging.
Experts from Vattenfall Europe Generation will discuss the potentials of conventional power plants, taking into account the political and economic circumstances in Germany.
In addition the issue of future requirements in power plant technology and the possibility of drying lignite will be discussed.

The international conference addresses world-wide specialists and managers of operating plants, manufacturers and suppliers as well as consulting engineers, technical quality inspectors, and research personnel.
