(firmenpresse) - SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/13/12 -- North County San Diego's only planetarium open to the public and the in California, located at on the campus of Palomar Community College, had a grand opening celebration fit for the stars last Friday, March 9th. Attendees of the festivities included members of the local community, school officials, staff and students; ; and , who delivered the project under a construction management-multiple prime delivery method.
The new, state-of-the-art, 6,300-square-foot planetarium seats 142 students and includes immersion technology that surrounds the viewer with an amazing 360-degree image. The six-sided building is almost as tall as it is wide, housing a 50-foot aluminum perforated dome. The dome rests on a 12-inch-thick concrete ellipse with a sloping top wall at 15 degrees. The 15-degree "slice" through the ellipse then creates a perfect 50-foot diameter circle for anchoring the specialized dome.
The planetarium and multi-media lab replaces the previous facility built in the mid-1960s, which held half the capacity with only a 30-foot dome. Funded by the second bond series of the $694-million Proposition M bond measure approved by voters in 2006, not only will this visually stunning technology create a more effective way of learning, it will provide a better educational experience. Swinerton is proud to be building a legacy in education and a starry future for students at Palomar College and the surrounding community.
