Dr. Jessica Todia and Dr. Tommy Wilson, who founded the in 2000, started taking in large and that pet owners could no longer care for in 2007. According to Dr. Todia, the sanctuary was born out of a real local need: "Our reputation for being able to provide quality care for exotics and large animals spread, and after a few years people came to us who could no longer take care of their reptiles, birds, alpacas, spiders etc. They'd ask for advice on where to find them a new home. There were really no other options out there, so we started taking them in, and the 'Peeps and Creeps' animal sanctuary was born."
The provide community education through "" as well. They teach to children through classroom visits with some of the animals. They frequently host groups of boy and girl scouts on tours through the sanctuary. Todia and Wilson also participate in animal welfare events throughout the community, such as National Pet Week in May.
According to Wilson, the clinic's , educating the public about proper pet care, whether for mammals, reptiles, birds or horses, is just as important to them as staying current on the "Well-educated pet owners are an animal's first line of preventative care," Wilson explained.
Dr. Todia is eager for the community to come out to the "Come Jump with Joey" benefit for the animal sanctuary. She says that the two main goals she has for the event on March 31 are to help raise money to continue providing a good level of care to the animals in the sanctuary, as well as helping with community education and awareness of animal welfare and health issues. The veterinarians, as well as many other staff members, will be on hand to answer questions and tell stories about the animals.
Todia says, "We just love these animals and can't imagine our lives without them now. When people have a chance to interact with the animals and get to know them close up, we hope they will learn to love them as much as we do, and take that concern for animal welfare back home with them."
