(firmenpresse) - MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 03/18/12 -- Leading high street retailer of , Swinton, welcomes new airbag technology developed by Volvo that could saves thousands of lives every year.

In 2010 alone, almost 6,000 people were seriously injured or killed on the road(i) so it was only a matter of time before a company found a way to help reduce these alarming figures. When asked, 27% of Swinton's customers said their biggest fear when driving would be to hit a pedestrian so this new technology should come as a relief to Swinton drivers.

The airbag is a U-shaped inflatable covering the uprights of the windscreen and where the wipers are which help to reduce or prevent injuries caused to pedestrians and cyclists in the event of a crash. The airbag activates when sensors fitted along the front bumper detect a collision and within a split second the bonnet bursts open revealing the airbag. The technology should be effective in most front-on collisions and will reduce the amount of damage caused but drivers are warned to not use it as an excuse to drive recklessly and told to still take care when driving.

Swinton fully supports Volvo's vision that nobody should be killed or injured in vehicles by 2020 and hopes other cars can follow in the same direction. As well as pushing to help reduce the number of road casualties, the technology is great for the car industry as it faces tough times.

Steve Chelton, Claims Manager at Swinton said "This is a fantastic move for Volvo and a great example for other cars of the future. If technology keeps advancing and drivers seek to drive cautiously, we may see a future with no deaths by any car and less accidents which means lower premiums."
