Sleep Issues Often Overlooked in Treatment for Eating Disorders, Caring Online Reports
(firmenpresse) - EDMONDS, WA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/20/12 -- sufferers are often also afflicted with sleep disorders, compounding the toll disordered eating takes on their bodies, according to , a website offering comprehensive information and resources on eating disorders.
The most common sleep disturbance among those with eating disorders is sleep apnea, according to Dr. Gregory Jantz, an who operates Caring Online. Sleep apnea is characterized by interruptions in breathing during sleep that deprive the body of oxygen.
Despite the prevalence of sleep issues among those with , testing for sleep disorders is by no means a standard part of and treatment. At , the residential facility in Edmonds, Wash., where Dr. Jantz is director, all clients admitted for are subjected to a sleep study. But The Center is the only facility that routinely evaluates patients for sleep problems.
For people whose bodies are under stress due to poor nutrition caused by an eating disorder, the medical consequences of disturbed sleep can be serious, warns Dr. Jantz. He says that apnea deprives the body of the deepest, most restful sleep, resulting in impaired brain function, fatigue and possibly depression. In people with or , the effects of sleep apnea can trigger further bingeing and purging episodes.
Sleep apnea is also associated with high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems and stroke. That's dangerous for severe sufferers, whose hearts are often dangerously weakened by a lack of proper nutrients and the chemical imbalances that food deprivation causes.
"It's no exaggeration to say that sleep apnea puts the eating disorder victim at increased risk for death," says Dr. Jantz. Eating disorders, especially anorexia, have a higher mortality rate than any other psychological condition.
Providing sleep studies to clients fits in with The Center's mission to provide what Dr. Jantz calls "whole-person care." Rather than narrowly focusing on eating disorders, whole-person care seeks to understand and address any other contributing medical and physiological factors that might be affecting a person's wellness, along with examining the psychological, emotional, social, familial and spiritual aspects of a person's life.
