HSI Canada and MAPAQ Rescue 125 Dogs from Inhumane Conditions at Commercial Breeding Operation in Quebec

(firmenpresse) - MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwire) -- 03/23/12 -- Humane Society International/Canada worked with the Quebec Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food with the mandate of ANIMA Quebec to rescue more than 125 dogs from a commercial breeding operation in the Chaudiere-Appalaches region, located south of Quebec City. The animals were seized and removed after multiple investigations indicated dogs were not receiving proper care.
The seizure followed an inspection by authorities, in which numerous infractions were observed in regards to the security and welfare of the animals.
"The HSI Animal Rescue Team assisted the Quebec government in removing and transporting more than a hundred neglected dogs from a commercial breeding operation in Quebec," said Rebecca Aldworth, executive director of Humane Society International/Canada. "The dogs and puppies were living in conditions that did not permit them to receive proper care."
HSI Canada and the MAPAQ promptly transported the rescued dogs to an emergency shelter in Quebec, where they will receive care, food and veterinary treatment.
This is the second time HSI Canada is assisting the Quebec government in seizing dogs from an inhumane commercial breeding operation. Last year, HSI Canada assisted the Quebec government with the historic rescue of more than 500 dogs from Canada's largest commercial breeding operation near Shawville, Quebec.
Recently MAPAQ introduced newly proposed animal cruelty penalties, as part of the updated P-42 (Quebec Animal Health Protection Act) regulations. For three years, HSI Canada has been sitting on a special task force -consisting of experts in animal welfare, veterinarians and industry representatives-to update the P-42 regulations. The expertise, research and perspectives contributed by task force participants have guided MAPAQ in updating the Province's animal welfare regulations.
HSI Canada thanks Nutrience (Rolf C. Hagen Inc.) and Kane Vet Supplies for much needed pet food for the shelter operation.
