Stereo Microscopes for Sophisticated Tasks
For the past decade, MAZeT has been developing and manufacturing embedded computing solutions for medical technology. The electronics for the latest generation of high-performance stereo microscopes from Carl Zeiss AG – the SteREO Lumar.V12 and the SteREO Discovery.V12 – were developed completely in-house at MAZeT. The brief for these sophisticated stereo microscopes, which are designed for advanced research as well as routine tasks, was to develop an innovative set of components and software that will ensure maximum user-friendliness while providing superb functionality.
The modular, expandable system concept of the microscope’s electronics comprises an operating and control unit, a CAN-based device bus, as well as numerous sensor and actuator modules. The system provides motors for focusing and for changing the magnification factor, sensors for detecting filter colors, and many other functions. The System Control Panel (SyCOP) is a new, user-friendly operating interface based on a 32-bit XScale processor and Windows CE.
The Carl Zeiss AG development project demonstrates how a customer’s requirements – in this case special functions, user-friendliness and an expandable system concept – can be translated into innovative electronics and software solutions. Both in medical technology and other areas of advanced electronics, the development of customer-specific components is increasingly being outsourced to external service providers. This is especially the case when the customer not only demands low product quantities, special features and competitive pricing, but also a long product lifecycle and service life.
