The Restaurant Performance Index Shows Growth in the Restaurant Industry -- One That Was Hit Hard by the Recession; Twigs Cafe, a Locally-Owned Restaurant in Pennsylvania, Looks to the Future and the Growth That the Coming Years Have in Store
(firmenpresse) - TUNKHANNOCK, PA -- (Marketwire) -- 04/17/12 -- The Restaurant Performance Index, run by the National Restaurant Association, has indicated growth in the industry for the fourth consecutive month, as of February. With a score of 101.9, February's index results signify that several important industry indicators are experiencing expansion. These indicators cover several aspects of the restaurant business, including sales, traffic, labor, and capital expenditures. As a result of these positive index scores, Twigs Café is looking to the future in an effort to prepare for business expansion.
Hudson Riehle, who is the senior vice president of the Research and Knowledge Group of the National Restaurant Association, explained the positive index scores in a press release: "Buoyed by continued gains in national employment and an extra day in February as a result of Leap Year, a solid majority of restaurant operators reported positive same-store sales and traffic results. In addition, restaurant operators are bullish about sales growth in months ahead, while their outlook for the economy remains cautiously optimistic."
This cautiously optimistic attitude is reflected in staffing objectives, which forecast that only seven percent of restaurants are planning to scale their teams back in the next six months. According to Riehle, this is the lowest this projection has been in the last eight years.
Locally owned restaurants, which play an incredibly important role in the community, are excited that business is looking up.
"Jobs in locally owned restaurants are, on average, more than just a job where one might scrape by. They provide gainful employment," commented Lori Bogedin, co-owner of . "Twigs employs, on average, 40 team members, 10 of which are full-time and eight full-time employees have fully paid benefits, with one or two weeks paid vacation. Many of our wait staff are part-time and have put themselves through or are attending college and can afford to live independently at the same time."
The restaurant owners who have experienced an increase in business are grateful for the patronage of their guests. As Bogedin points out in the following quotation, supporting locally owned businesses is a wonderful way for consumers to support their communities through this difficult economic time.
"I realize that in this stressful economy where food, gas, and, well just about everything, continues to rise, many nonessential activities have to be reduced," asserted Bogedin. "But when choosing to go out to eat, choose an independently owned and operated restaurant or business. On average, when you dine in local restaurants, 80 percent of each dollar is returned back to the community."
