Transmode brings MPLS-TP to packet-optical metro networking

(Thomson Reuters ONE) -

Stockholm, Sweden and Ethernet Europe, Munich, Germany - 17(th) April 2012 -
Transmode, a global supplier of packet-optical networking solutions, today
announced the addition of MPLS-TP capabilities to its range of packet-optical
Ethernet Muxponders.

To meet the growing demands for increased service flexibility in Ethernet
networks, Transmode has added MPLS-TP to its family of Layer 2 Ethernet
Muxponders (EMXP). The new capabilities provide operators with connection-
oriented transport services over native Ethernet based packet-optical networks.
MPLS-TP extends the widely deployed MPLS technology to Transport Ethernet
services using IETF standards compliant implementation by adding Operations,
Administration and Maintenance (OAM) capabilities and improving the resiliency.

"As services continue to evolve and capacities continue to increase, transport
networks need to become much more packet friendly and the addition of MLPS-TP is
an important step along that route," said Sten Nordell, Transmode's CTO.

"MPLS-TP helps to optimize work flows within Network Operators which ensures
simple and well understood operational models and minimized operational costs,"
Mr Nordell continued. "By combining MPLS-TP with network management-based
control, we enable operators to configure MPLS-TP tunnels and services in a
similar way to the paths and services that are used in ROADM-based optical
networks. The approach also enables the management of the network across layers
0 to 2.5 to ensure optimal performance in scenarios such as multi-layer
protection or restoration."

MPLS-TP is of great interest to network operators as it brings SDH/SONET-like
management, protection and restoration, and OAM capabilities to Ethernet
services at a low cost. It also has a familiar look and feel to network
operators and fits well with existing processes and management.

Transmode's widely-deployed family of Ethernet Muxponders now includes MPLS-TP
on a per service basis. This means that any port can support a mix of Layer 2
native Ethernet and MPLS-TP services, such as the recently announced Metro
Ethernet Forum (MEF) Carrier Ethernet 2.0 services. Furthermore, as MPLS-TP is
implemented on the same hardware platform as Transmode's Ethernet services, it
can be provided with the same low latency with zero jitter and superior SyncE
performance.

Sten Nordell will be discussing MPLS-TP in packet optical metro networks in a
panel discussion on MPLS-TP in transport networks - how to simplify metro
Ethernet networks by deploying an end-to-end MPLS-based Carrier Ethernet network
at Light Reading's Ethernet Europe in Munich on April 18(th).

Definitions:

MPLS - Multi-protocol Label Switching, is a technology used for high performance
traffic forwarding, traffic engineering and virtual private networks (VPNs) in
IP networks, where forwarding is based on labels, not on IP or Ethernet
addresses.

MPLS-TP - Multi-protocol Label Switching (Transport Profile), is a profile of
MPLS for transport networks that is defined in the IETF. It takes a subset of
the MPLS protocol suite and adds some extensions to address transport network
requirements.

About Transmode
Transmode is a global provider of packet-optical networking solutions that
enable fixed line and mobile network operators to cost effectively address the
capacity needs created by the rapid growth in video and data traffic. These
solutions are important building blocks in next-generation high-speed optical
networks that support services such as broadband backhaul, mobile data backhaul,
video delivery services and cloud computing. Transmode's solutions are based on
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and packet optical transport
technologies, which are designed to increase the capacity, flexibility and
functionality of optical metro core and metro access networks. Transmode's
Intelligent WDM (iWDM(TM)) approach gives key advantages to customers, such as
ultra-low latency, low power consumption and innovative network design.

Transmode is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden and is listed on the NASDAQ-OMX
Stockholm Exchange (TRMO). Since 2000 the company has installed more than
30,000 systems for over 400 fixed and mobile network operators, service
providers, large enterprises and public institutions in over 40 countries across
the globe.
