CanNor Supports Long-Term Economic Development in the NWT
(firmenpresse) - YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES -- (Marketwire) -- 04/18/12 -- The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) and Minister of Health today announced funding to help the Norman Wells Land Corporation conduct a comprehensive land survey that will enable them to benefit from potential economic development projects in the Sahtu region.
"This investment in the Norman Wells Land Corporation will create jobs and help local Sahtu people develop skills by participating in the survey work," said Minister Aglukkaq. "It will also provide a foundation for the Sahtu's community planning, economic development and long-term prosperity."
"The Norman Wells Land Corporation thanks Minister Aglukkaq and the highly dedicated staff at the Regional Office and our MLA for the Sahtu Region Mr. Norman Yakeleya for their support of our project," said Cece McCauley, President of Norman Wells Land Corporation. "This project will enable youth in the Sahtu Region to gain valuable training and work experience, which will allow them to gain future employment opportunities in the region."
The Norman Wells Land Corporation has signed a Block Land Transfer with the Government of the Northwest Territories. The land shows potential for major mineral, oil and gas and recreational development which will provide long-term economic benefits for the people of the region. To plan and develop this potential, a comprehensive survey is required of the 14,720 hectare block in the area surrounding the community of Norman Wells.
This investment is funded by CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity-building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
