Every Dollar Donated Will Provide Food, Shelter, Health Care and Job Support for Neighbors in Greatest Need

(firmenpresse) - NEWPORT BEACH, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 04/19/12 -- In response to the persistent needs many Orange County residents face four years after the economic crisis, the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) today launched its response to support our neighbors in greatest need, with a focus on struggling families and returning veterans. The OCCF Board of Governors has committed $345,000 and invites local community members to join the effort.

The public is invited to make contributions through June 1. Grants will be awarded to local nonprofits by June 30. And because OCCF is underwriting all program expenses, 100 percent of contributions will be applied directly toward critical safety-net services.

The grant program will direct funds to Orange County-based nonprofits serving vulnerable families and veterans with:

is OCCF's fourth annual response to provide critical aid to struggling neighbors since the economic crisis hit in 2008. Over the past three years, OCCF has delivered nearly directly to Orange County nonprofits working to meet the food, shelter, health care and other safety-net needs of those most vulnerable in our community.

With the unemployment rate in Orange County standing at 8 percent, thousands of families are still struggling to feed their children and meet their basic needs. In fact, 20 percent of Californians are unable to afford enough food for their families and 26,029 Orange County children don't have a place to call home, according to the Orange County Department of Education.

Needs are also growing within the local veteran community, as returning soldiers experience difficulty transferring their military skills to the civilian workforce. National unemployment rates for veterans have been estimated as high as 16.7 percent, over double that of the general population and the number of homeless veterans also follow this trend: a staggering 20 percent of the veteran population is homeless, compared to 8 percent of the general population.

"Even four years after the economic crisis, critical needs persist for thousands in Orange County," said Shelley Hoss, president of the Orange County Community Foundation. "The effort focuses especially on vulnerable families and veterans, and contributions made to the response by generous donors and friends will bring safety-net services to those who need them most."

Contributions of any amount to are welcome. To make a credit card donation online, visit . Checks payable to OCCF (with "ReachOut OC" in the memo line) can be mailed to the Orange County Community Foundation at 4041 MacArthur Blvd., Suite 510, Newport Beach, CA 92660.

Founded in 1989, the Orange County Community Foundation works with donors, strengthens the local nonprofit sector and works to find solutions to community needs. The Foundation has granted more than $200 million since its inception. In 2011 OCCF ranked as the 10th most active grantmaker among more than 750 U.S. community foundations.
