A Voice for Victims: Canada's Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime Marks National Victims of Crime Awareness Week

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 04/23/12 -- Sue O'Sullivan, Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime, is urging Canadians to focus on victims needs and issues during this years' National Victims of Crime Awareness Week.
She will be marking the week by moderating a panel about Resiliency and Empowerment for Victims and Victim Service Providers at the National Victims of Crime Annual national Symposium in Ottawa on April 23, 2012.
"This week is dedicated to victims of crime, it is time to shift the focus towards their rights and their needs within the criminal justice system," says Ms. O'Sullivan. "My job is to amplify their voices, draw attention to their concerns, and identify these concerns to the Federal Government. I am committed to fostering a national dialogue about victims, and providing recommendations to the Federal Government on how this country can enhance their rights and treatment within the system."
Launched in 2006, National Victims of Crime Awareness Week was created to provide an opportunity to reflect on how Canada is meeting the needs of victims of crime.
"It is time to shift the conversation, from offender-management issues, to those directly facing victims today, says Ms. O'Sullivan. "This week, however, should be about more than listening and acknowledging; it should be about coming together to take action to make positive change for victims of crime."
The Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime helps victims to address their needs, promotes their interests and makes recommendations to the federal government on issues that negatively impact victims.
