"We applaud President Obama for standing up today for truth and justice in the military and working to end the epidemic of sexual assaults within our Armed Forces.
"For two years we worked on The Invisible War with the explicit goal of bringing attention to this problem in the military and revealing the damage it causes to our service members and society at large. We know that since our film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and won the Audience Award, it has been quietly circulating with key policymakers in Washington.
"Given the outcry the film has provoked, we hope that the President will view it in the coming weeks. We are certain the documentary will continue to shed even further light on this subject, and are honored and humbled that today the issue made it all the way to the Commander-in-Chief.
"In the film we call for many of the reforms that the Department of Defense announced last week and the President praised today. We believe these reforms, which remove decisions from the hands of lower ranking commanders, are a commendable first step.
"But there is still much more that needs to be done to protect our troops. As the film conclusively shows, the vast majority of sexual assaults in the military are committed by a small minority of service members who are serial perpetrators who carefully select, stalk, and assault their victims again and again. The DoD needs to initiate a proactive strategy to go after these 'enemies within.'
"The film, which will be released in theaters in June, examines this issue in great depth.
"We will continue to work on effecting change after the film leaves the theaters, because rape should not be an occupational hazard. And because this is not, as so many believe, a war zone problem; in fact, 80% of the 'military rapes' occur away from war zones. We are gratified to know that our film has already helped to influence our leaders to take some initial first steps towards protecting our service members."
"This powerful, evocative and haunting movie by Kirby and Amy has already succeeded in getting the attention of top policymakers. We look forward to bringing it to theatres in June so every American can become informed about this terribly important and deeply troubling issue... and demand change from those in power."
