KARE 11's Boyd Huppert Takes on the Leading Cause of House Fires

(firmenpresse) - GOLDEN VALLEY, MN -- (Marketwire) -- 04/30/12 -- Cooking is the leading cause of residential fires in Minnesota. More fires are caused by cooking than heating, candles, smoking and arson -- combined.

With staggering facts like these, KARE 11 reporter Boyd Huppert felt more investigation and explanation was needed. Boyd shares what he learned and what home owners can do to prevent future fires in a two-part KARE 11 Extra on Monday, April 30 and Tuesday, May 1 during KARE 11 News at 10 p.m.

"This is information everyone needs to see," said Boyd Huppert, KARE 11 reporter. "Knowing the proper course of action is crucial when a kitchen fire starts. I'll never again turn on a stove without picturing the devastation these fires can cause."

Monday's 10 p.m. report profiles a son's concern over his mother's death from a small kitchen grease fire and the fact that they were not aware of or prepared for the potential danger. Also included in the report are details about a tiny yet powerful device that can extinguish kitchen grease fires in an instant.

On Tuesday at 10 p.m., Huppert reports on a potentially life-saving residential sprinkler system that firefighters want to make mandatory in Minnesota but that builders believe will stop construction in its tracks.

"You'll never really know how many lives, and how much property will be saved by your KARE 11 story. But it will save lives," said Steve Zaccard, St. Paul Fire Marshal.

Local fire departments and agencies are working together to host a community education event on Saturday, May 5 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Fire Station #1 in St. Paul. The event will feature demonstrations, safety information and interactive lessons focused on kitchen fire safety.

In addition, KARE 11 has teamed up with Minnesota Lowes stores to make the kitchen fire extinguisher profiled in Monday's report, StoveTop FireStop, available to home owners at a special price.
