New North American Consortium Reveals a Groundbreaking Process Which Transforms Produced Oilfield Wastewater Into Fresh Water

(firmenpresse) - ABILENE, TX and CALGARY, AB -- (Marketwire) -- 05/02/12 -- (TSRP), a new group which has brought together , and (USA), is pleased to announce it has completed successful field testing of a groundbreaking process which transforms produced oilfield wastewater into usable, fresh water. Their innovation will improve the oil extraction process, reducing wastewater and wastewater transportation and enhancing formation water for re-injection, thereby reviving fields which have previously been deemed uneconomical due to wastewater handling issues.

As the demand for oil remains high, operators are looking for methods of improving the extraction process. Oilfield wastewater remains a contentious issue when determining the cost of extracting oil.

Chris Tesarski, President & CEO of TSRP, has just announced their group, a partnership of scientists and business executives, can now transform wastewater created from a producing oilfield into clean, usable fresh water.

To achieve this, formation water is taken from below the surface and oil is separated using traditional two phase separation for sale. The produced wastewater then goes through a patented nano-polymer dispersion process to strip out solids, creating pure salt water that is two to three times the salinity of sea water. Lastly, the salt water is desalinated through a patented forward osmosis process to produce fresh water. The partnership intends to ensure its water meets or exceeds all standards for regulatory approval.

"The high demand for oil means we are working on marginal leases that can create upwards of 200 barrels of wastewater for every few barrels of oil. For reservoir stimulation some of this wastewater is re-injected into the formation to flush out oil, provided you own the injection well," begins Tesarski, President & CEO of Texas Sands Resource Partnership. "If you are a producer that does not have the option to re-inject, sending wastewater to unrelated facilities can be prohibitively expensive and won't improve field production.

"By utilizing the new TSRP process on both leases that have injection capability and leases that can now be deemed economic by relieving the cost of wastewater disposal, we address two key issues -- our need for viable oil extraction and our need for water. This phenomenal combination goes right to the heart of North American energy independence.

"It's abundantly clear just how desperate the water situation is in West Texas, and throughout parts of Canada and the lower 48," Tesarski continues. "This new process creates fresh water that can be used by ranchers and entire communities. It is a significant step forward for the energy industry, the environment, and communities which struggle with fresh water supply."

"This new process can be a real game changer when dealing with both wastewater produced from the oil field and other water that has oil and solid problems," said Dr. Ian Ireland, VP of ERIN Consulting, the group responsible for removing solids from the waste. "We are excited about this new discovery and believe this is the beginning of something very positive and very big," said Dr. Ireland, Chief Science Officer for TSRP.

Dr. Paul Fairchild, Owner of Nu H20 - New Water and Vice Chairman & Managing Director - Technology & Operations for TSRP, is responsible for the desalination process. "We're creating water that can be used as a resource," explains Fairchild. "That to me is the whole reason we wanted to be in this business. Not only are we making the oil process more clean and efficient, we are now producing two key resources instead of one."

Jim Ireland, President of ERIN Consulting, will bring his extensive background in environmental consulting to TSRP as Chairman of the Board. "Bringing an additional environmental component to the oil industry is always an exciting move," shares Ireland. "We look forward to setting up a prototype later this year. The next six months are going to be very important for TSRP and the oil industry as a whole."
