Innovative Demo of OpenFlow for Enterprises on Show at Interop

(firmenpresse) - LAS VEGAS, NV -- (Marketwire) -- 05/08/12 -- With enterprise and service provider customers paying ever more attention to the operational and financial benefits that software-defined networking offers, Vello Systems unveils a Remote Data Replication Manager that programs an OpenFlow enabled Vello network via extensions to OpenStack.

A demonstration of this innovative solution is on display this week at Interop Las Vegas, at Vello's booth, number 2305.

Vello's Remote Data Replication Manager is an SDN application that allows cloud users to subscribe to replication on demand for large volumes of data within and between data centers via Vello's networking systems and the VellOS network operating system. The use of Vello's OpenFlow-enabled SDN automates the process of providing network resources for storage replication, delivering better network optimization, and rapid response to service demands in real-time.

Latency and network convergence issues common in today's multilayered networks have made remote storage replication over distance overly complex and challenging. The use of Vello's SDN enables a low-latency, programmable solution resulting in a faster and more flexible network, in keeping with the rapid changes that IT administrators are familiar with in the world of server virtualization. For enterprises, Vello's SDN-based RDRM simplifies the process of network configuration and re-configuration, providing savings in network operations.

The demonstration at the Vello booth shows the RDRM application provisioning and managing data replication services between two OpenStack clouds, linking server and storage resources at each location. Tightly integrated with OpenStack, visibility to network resources and network utilization is provided by RDRM to the IT administrators managing the OpenStack cloud resources. The tenant users in OpenStack clouds can order up compute and storage resources with data protection while OpenStack itself uses hooks built into RDRM to automatically order up and provision network resources for the priority replication flows.

Engineering services firm Mirantis provides expertise in open source application infrastructure and OpenStack, with one of the largest groups of experts in OpenStack under a single roof. Mirantis CEO Adrian Ionel sees broad application for an OpenFlow-based network replication application. "We see a large need for SDN integration with OpenStack cloud operating between data centers. A Remote Data Replication service delivered with OpenFlow provides great value to storage cloud administrators and tenants to enable data protection on demand for their VMs," said Mirantis CEO Adrian Ionel.

"As SDN environments mature, organizations will be looking for this technology to solve real business problems," stated Bob Laliberte, senior analyst at the Enterprise Strategy Group. "Vello has addressed one of those needs by developing an innovative Remote Data Replication service to rapidly enable the network to support data protection environments."

"With the Remote Data Replication Manager, Vello is demonstrating a real-world application of software defined open networking," said Vello CEO Karl May. "Leveraging the programmability and extensibility of VellOS, we are providing a complete turnkey solution integrated with OpenStack that solves a current mission critical data protection problem. We see RDRM as the first of many applications Vello will introduce into the market."
