Two Tucson Schools Rank in the Top Ten Nationally

(firmenpresse) - TUCSON, AZ -- (Marketwire) -- 05/08/12 -- BASIS Tucson and University High were recognized today as academic powerhouses among American high schools. Both schools ranked in the top 10 public high school in the nation and BASIS Tucson, which ranked 6th overall, was also named #1 as the nation's Best Charter School and Arizona's highest ranking open enrollment school (meaning it does not have a selective admissions process). BASIS Tucson was also named the #2 Best High School for Math and Science by U.S. News in September of 2011.
When conducting the Best High Schools ranking, U.S. News partnered with the American Institute for Research, one of the largest behavioral and social science research organizations in the world, to analyze information from nearly 22,000 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. The methodology behind the ranking "reflects how well high schools serve all of their students, not just those who are planning to go to college," according to U.S. News.
Using data from the 2009-10 school year, the ranking relied on a three step process to determine the nation's best high schools. Researchers first looked at students' results on state reading and math proficiency tests to determine whether a school's students performed better than statistically expected. Researchers then determined whether the school's least advantaged students (black, Hispanic, low income) performed better than average for similar students in the state, according to U.S. News.
Schools that advanced past the first two steps were assessed based on a third metric -- the level of college readiness among students. The assessment of a school's college readiness was based on the percentage of students who participated in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests and their success on these exams.
Based on the results of the three step evaluation, U.S. News ranked the top 4,813 schools. The top 500 schools received a Gold Medal distinction; schools numbered 501 through 1,971 received a Silver Medal; and schools numbered 1,972 through 2,842 received a Bronze Medal.
"In the 13 years since BASIS Tucson opened its doors, we have remained resolute in our mission to elevate academic achievement to internationally competitive levels," says Julia Toews, BASIS Tucson Head of School. "Our expectations are high and our students have risen to the challenge. Their incredible accomplishments prove that all students, not just those enrolled in elite, selective schools, can achieve at extraordinary levels."
Michael K. Block, Co-CEO of BASIS Educational Group, agrees. "We have found that when we raise our expectations for our students, they prove us right," says Block. "U.S. standards are abysmally low compared to many countries around the world, but when we implement international standards in American schools, we find our students are just as capable of mastering this material as their international counterparts."
Block looks forward to bringing this exceptional learning environment to students in more communities as BASIS expands throughout Arizona and across the country. In August of 2012, BASIS will open two more Arizona locations and its first out-of-state school in Washington, DC.
