On April 30th, 2012, Ms. Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women Canada National Committee; accompanied by two board members; Emily Wright and Surina Sud, met with a group of Indonesian delegates at the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Toronto, Canada. Members of the group included Ms. Cicilia Rusdiharini, Minister and Counselor for Political Affairs; H.E. Dienne Moehario, the Indonesian Ambassador to Canada; the representative of the Indonesian Consul General of Toronto, Mr. Sudarsono Soedirlan, Consul for Social and Cultural Affairs; and members from the Indonesian House of Regional Representatives.
Intrigued by Ms. Jiwani's international experience and advocacy for Gender Equality and Women's Economic Empowerment, the Indonesian Embassy reached out to Ms. Jiwani for her technical expertise. Since the Bill Drafting Committee from the House of Regional Representatives is in the process of addressing gender inequity in Indonesia, they were particularly interested in Ms. Jiwani's global experience with gender equality initiatives and women's empowerment. The deliberations between Ms. Jiwani and the Delegation also examined the transformative role of non-governmental organizations and civil societies in influencing gender equality nationally and internationally. In closing, the delegates were very pleased with the outcome from their engaging discussions, and expressed a strong interest in collaborating with Ms. Jiwani in the development, coordination, and implementation of gender equitable policies in Indonesia. After the deliberations, the delegation also presented Ms. Almas Jiwani with various tokens of appreciation.
Commenting on the meeting of the members of the Indonesian delegates with Ms. Jiwani, the Indonesian Ambassador to Canada, H.E. Dienne H. Moehario, stated, "The information from the President of UN Women Canada National Committee, Ms. Almas Jiwani, to the Indonesian Delegation of the Bill Drafting Committee on Gender Equality of the Indonesian House of Representatives will be fruitful, on the importance of people's participation in the policy making process which promotes gender equality in Canada."
"I am honoured to be working with the Indonesian delegation as they strive to strengthen gender equality within their country. I look forward to lending my time and knowledge to assist in drafting Indonesia's gender equality bills and developing tangible strategies for women's empowerment through gender-sensitive legislation," says Jiwani.
The Indonesian delegates also indicated an interest in strengthening their nation's relationship with Canada, a diplomatic relationship that is 60 years old this year. To that effect, the Indonesian Consulate will be hosting a cultural event later this year in Ottawa, and has graciously invited Ms. Jiwani to attend as a special guest.
